Rejecting 'Tibet independence', China on Thursday asked the Dalai Lama to "fundamentally" change his political stance and become a "patriot" by accepting three pre-conditions, including "adherence" to the ruling Communist Party's leadership in the remote Himalayan Buddhist region. The demands were made by Beijing during the latest round of in-camera negotiations between Chinese officials and the envoys of the Dalai Lama on the vexed Tibet issue held here this week. "Adherence to the CPC's leadership, the socialist path with Chinese characteristics and the regional autonomy system for ethnic minorities were stipulated in China's Constitution, which were also the most prominent political reality in Tibet," Du Qinglin, a top Communist Party official in-charge of ties with non-communist groups, said. "No activities that defy the 'three adherences' and the Constitution would be tolerated," Du, also vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, was quoted as saying by the state-run Xinhua news agency. His remarks were the first public comments by China since the two days of talks ended yesterday. The talks, the eighth round since 2002 and the first after Beijing hosted the Olympics in August, were held amid growing concern about the Dalai Lama's health and the dwindling possibility of a meaningful settlement. Du told the Dalai Lama's envoys - Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen - that the "three adherences" must be implemented unwaveringly and unswervingly. All organisations or individuals must act in accordance with the Constitution, safeguard its dignity and abide by it and the law on the regional autonomy system for ethnic minorities, he said.
